Origin of Village Name

Newick is derived from the Anglo Saxon Niwe wic (new farm) and was recorded as Newik in the thirteenth century.

General Details

Newick lies on the Uckfield to Horsham road nearby Chailey .

The village is quite old as the church contains some Norman archicture .

In 1737 the Parish Register shows John Boots was killed in a cricket match as he ran into the other batsman.

In 1818 Thomas Baden-Powell became rector here, and with his son and cousin preached for 101 years. The family was closely related to the founder of the Scout movement (see Robertsbridge ).

In 1897 the village pump which is located on the green was given by local plumber Richard Fuller to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria .

In 1934 young Derek Bogaerde played in the Newick Amateur Dramatics Society production of 'Journeys End'. The young Derek became famous as the world renown Dirk Bogarde star of many feature films.

St Marys church (Newick East Sussex)
Newick has a number of shops, public houses and the church to provide services.

Haywards Heath lies about 5 miles to the west and provides a large shopping centre and trains to London , Lewes and Brighton .

Views

Newick has a really pretty village centre with the green leading down to a row of old shops and uphill to the public houses.

The village pump is quite unusual and interesting to look at.
