(Marshes, Rich farmland and smugglers)
The Smugglers and Dr Syn area covers the villages between Winchelsea in the
west to Hamstreet in the north Hythe in the east and Dungeness in the south.
The area covers the Romney Marsh , Walland and Guldeford Marshes . It has been laid down by the
rich alluvial soil deposited by the river Rother. The Rother originally flowed to the sea
near Hythe, then after Roman times it changed to flow through to modern day Greatstone
and Littlestone , and today it flows to the sea at Rye Harbour .
The area has a stark beauty of its own, and also has unique wildlife , which is visible
at the Nature reserves at Rye Harbour and Dungeness.
It has its own unique steam railway the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway which runs along
the coast. This narrow gauge miniature railway is a great attraction for visitors.
The coast provides the best sandy beaches in the South East of the country, with shallow
water allowing safe access for children.
