Rye Castle Museum

here for the official Rye Museum Web Site.

Ypres Tower Rye Castle Museum is the local history museum for the beautiful maritime town of Rye .

It displays objects from Rye's long history and also introduces you to Rye's illustrious past. It helps you understand why Rye was once one of Britain's leading ports and also why that changed from the sixteenth century onwards.

The Museum has two sites, one a medieval building known as the Ypres Tower and the other an old bottling factory, now converted into a museum, in East Street. The Ypres Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Rye , and survived the burning of the town by the French at the end of the fourteenth century.

On display in the Tower are; medieval pottery, ironwork, smuggling and law enforcement items. Our East Street building contains Rye's old fire engine from the eighteenth century and paintings and engravings of Rye in the past. There is an exhibition of pottery made in Rye including the renowned hopware, the famous Sussex Pig and Rye Pottery.

This is just a small part of what is on show.
