(Turner , Mad Jack and Kipling Tour )

This tour will take you around the villages of Brightling and Burwash. Visiting the Follies of "Mad Jack Fuller", the area where Turner painted many landscapes, and Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling. This tour will take a minimum of 2 hours.

Back to Dallington Netherfield Forward to Brightling

Netherfield ChurchIf you are coming into Netherfield from Battle, continue through the village on the Heathfield road. About 1 mile past the village turn right at the crossroads at the bottom of the hill towards Brightling.

If you are coming towards Netherfield from Dallington, turn left at at the crossroads at the bottom of the hill towardsBrightling. This is about 1 mile before the village of Netherfield.

To move on to Brightling follow the road up the hill, and turn right at the first junction, be careful, as it is not very easy to see. Drive down this lane for about 1/4 mile and look to your left, where you will see, in the middle of a field Jack Fullers Watch Tower. Continue on and turn left at the next junction, then pass under the Gypsum Conveyor, which takes ore to Mountfield Follow the road up to the Jack Fullers, now a Restaurant, then turn left towards Brightling.

Back to Netherfield Brightling Burwash

Fullers Pyramid in the Churchyard If you are coming into Brightling from the Robertsbridge or Jack Fuller Arms direction. Go about 1/4miles past the Fuller's Arms, stop on the top of the bridge, get out of your car and look to your left and right. This is the 5 mile conveyor which take mined gypsum from Brightling to Mountfield where it is processed.

If you are coming towards Brightling from the Dallington or Heathfield direction, we suggest you start your tour in Dallington.

Continue to the junction at the top of the hill, and look to your left, where you can again see Jack Fullers Watch Tower. Turn right into the village, go round the S bend and stop outside the church. Take a walk into the churchyard to see Jack Fullers Pyramid.

Continue along the road about 1/2 mile, with Fuller's walled estate to your left, continue past the junction next to the gate house, then turn next right - about 1/4 mile. Drive to the top of the hill, and stop where you will find to your right, Jack Fullers Observatory. Look south and you can see the South Downs in all their glory at Eastbourne. Look North and you can see the North Downs at Maidstone. Imagine Turner painting landscapes in this beautiful area. Carry on down the hill to the cross road, and to your left is Brightling Needle another of Fullers Follies.

To carry on to Burwash continue down the hill and up to Burwash.

Burwash Dallington

If you are coming into Burwash from the Heathfield direction, travel into the village centre and turn right into the public car park next to the Bear Inn.

If you are coming into the village from the Stonegate or Etchingham direction, go into the centre of the village, and turn left into the Public Car park next to the Bear Inn.

If you are coming into Burwash from Brightling, you will come into the village at the War Memorial next to the church. Turn left and drive into the village centre, then turn left into the Public Car park next to the Bear Inn.

Take a relaxing walk around the village, enjoying the tree lined high street, and perhaps stopping for refreshment in one of the local Public Houses or Tea Rooms.

When you are ready to proceed, turn left out of the car park, drive towards Heathfield for about 1/2 mile, and turn left signposted Batemans. Drive down this small lane and spend an hour or two exploring the home of Rudyard Kipling nestling deep in the peaceful East Sussex countryside.

To move on to Dallington turn right out of the car park at Batemans, and continue carefully down this quiet Sussex lane, until you reach a T junction. Turn right and head up the hill, over the crossroads to the top, next to Fullers Observatory. From the top continue down the hill, and turn right at the T junction, this will take you to Woods Corner, a part of the parish of Dallington.

Dallington Netherfield

If you are coming into Dallington from Heathfield turn right at the top of the hill into the quiet village centre of Dallington.

If you are coming into Dallington from Battle or Netherfield, we suggest you start your tour in Netherfield.

If you are coming into the Village from the Burwash direction, turn right at Woods Corner, drive about 1/4 mile towards Heathfield, then turn left into Dallington.

Dallington is a very small village, with a few very old and beautiful houses, walk around and investigate the church, and picturesque buildings.

To move on to Netherfield turn round, and drive back up the hill to the junction, turn right towards Battle continue past the cross road at Woods Corner, and on for about a further 1/4 mile.

Stop just before the top of the hill, and look to your left. The building you can see is Jack Fullers Sugar Loaf(see Brightling), another folly, which was built to win a bet. The property was still lived in at the turn of this century.

Carry on down the hill for another 1 mile, again look to your left, and you can see in the distance, the Temple, which Fuller built as a summer house.
