Ridgeway)
This tour will take you across the ancient route known as the Ridgeway running from Hawkhurst to Heathfield. This tour will take a minimum of 2 hours. We suggest you only start this tour at

Choose the village where you wish to start from.
If you are coming into Hawkhurst from Hurst Green. Drive up to the church and look around the area known as the Moor, this is the old part of town. From here continue on the same road until you reach the traffic lights. Turn right, and about 200 yards further on opposite the garage, is the car park. Stop here and investigate the Collonade, and imagine the area full of armed Smugglers.
If you are coming into Hawkhurst from the Rye direction, stop in the car park just before the traffic lights, and follow the above instructions.
If you are coming into Hawkhurst from Maidstone turn left at the traffic lights and stop in the car park as above.
If you are coming into Hawkhurst from the Flimwell, go straight over the traffic lights, and follow the above instructions.
To carry on to
drive out of the car park and turn left at the traffic lights, and follow the road until you come to the junction with the A21 turn left into Hurst Green.
If you are coming into Hurst Green from Hawkhurst, continue into the village centre, and turn right at the clock tower, park here and take a walk around.
If you are coming into Hurst Green from Etchingham stop in the village centre before you reach the clock tower, and walk around the village..
To move on to
turn left at the clock tower drive just outside the village and turn right. Continue until you reach Hawkhurst.
To move on to
just continue driving down the hill until you reach Etchingham.
If you are coming into Etchingham from the Hurst Green direction, stop just before the level crossing, and look at the view to your right, up the Rother valley. Continue into the village, and investigate the church.
If you are coming into Etchingham from Burwash, stop at the church, and investigate the oldest weather vane. Continue over the level crossing, and look at the view to your left up the Rother valley.
To move on to
carry on the main road through the village, up the straight mile and into Burwash.
To move on to
carry on the main road and up the hill to Hurst Green.
If you are coming into Burwash from Etchingham, drive past the church, and into the high street, where you will find the car park on your left in the village centre. Walk round Burwash, as it is a very pretty village. If you have an hour or two to spare, drive down to Batemans, to see Rudyard Kiplings House and gardens, set in a beautiful rural setting.
If you are coming into Burwash from Burwash Weald, drive into the village centre, park in the car park which is on your right, and investigate the high street. you may wish to visit Batemans, (see above).
To move on to
turn left out of the car park, and continue until you reach Burwash Weald.
To move on to
turn right out of the car park, and continue until you reach Etchingham.
If you are coming into Burwash Weald from Burwash, drive into the centre of the village, and look to your left across the wooded hills to Brightling Needle. Carry on to the top of the village, and look to your right across the Rother valley towards Stonegate.
If you are coming into Burwash Common from Broad Oak , as you arrive in the village, at the top of the hill look down to your left towards Stonegate. Then drive into the centre of the village, and look to your right across the wooded hills to Brightling Needle.
If you are coming into Broad Oak from Burwash Common, just travel into the village, the main road travels straight through. If you are feeling adventurous, there is a loop road to the north, and one to the south, both of which have very pretty views.
If you are coming into Broad Oak from Heathfield, just travel into the village, the main road travels straight through. Again if you are feeling adventurous, there is a loop road to the north, and one to the south, both of which have very pretty views.
If you are coming into Heathfield from Broad Oak, travel into the town, turn left just before the fire station, and park in the car park. In the town there are a wealth of shops waiting for you.
If you are coming into Heathfield from Battle, drive into the town centre and follow the above instructions.
If you are coming into Heathfield from Lewes, just before the town centre turn right next to the fire station, into the car park, and follow the above instructions.
To move on to
come out of the car park and turn right through the town centre, and continue on the main road to Broad Oak..
