High Weald and Oast Houses

_The Area

(A Rural Farming area)

The High Weald and Oast Houses area covers the villages between Frant and Newenden to the south and Boughton Monchelsea and Yalding to the north.

The area has been a farming area for most of its time due to the rich sediments deposited in the area. Hops were a major industry from the middle of the 19th century , due to the railways transporting the hops to the local towns for beer manufacture, and therefore the large number of Oast Houses.

The Areas proximity to the major towns of Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone the motorway network and the trains make it an area where many of the rural villages are now populated by commuters, who bring wealth into the area.
