High Weald and Oast Houses

High Weald and Oast Houses

We have named this area High Weald and Oast Houses, because this area was in the forest of Andreasweald , and there are many Oast houses locally, which were used to dry hops for the beer industry.

The area mostly consists of small villages, with many ancient churches, and a few small towns with interesting history.

Much of the area was involved in the Wealden Iron industry, the area around Horsmonden and Lamberhurst were famous for their cannons and Iron products.

The other industry which brought riches to the area was the Broadcloth Industry, this was centred around the Tenterden , Cranbrook , Biddenden and Marden areas, and for many years produced the best cloth in England.

Today the area is quiet and peaceful with the feel of the TV program the "Darling buds of May".
