Lynda had a problem with her CD player

Dear Wizard

Can you help me with a problem I have running some CDs. Most CDs I use on computer (Encarta) etc run perfectly well, but I have 3 which will not start, eg initially I put the CD in the D drive - autorun started and I  followed the install prompt. The program worked ok on first usage, but then when I subsequently load the CD it spins vainly for a short while then stops.

Any thoughts???

Lynda,

Some CD's are recorded slightly out of alignment, and can cause the symptom you describe. Usually the CD's with a problem are the cheap mass produced ones, as their quality control is not quite as good as the main manufacturers. It is also possible that your CD drive has been knocked slightly out of alignment, or is worn, so that the CD's are not quite read properly. My quick suggestion is that you clean the CD's with the problem using Mr Sheen, as it can remove greasy deposits that can deflect the laser light.

So :- Either the CD Drive is on its way out
You can test this by trying to load the CD on a friends PC if it works, your drive is probably faulty.

Or :- The CD's are Dirty

Or :- The CD's have not been correctly recorded, or have a fault on them.

You can test this by trying to load the CD on a friends PC if it doesn't work, your CD is probably faulty.

I cannot tell which one it is but I hope this helps

Merlin,

I have tried as you suggested, and it looked like my CD was faulty, I have bought a new one and it works fine

Thanks

Linda
