Have you wondered how difficult
it is to register your own web site name and point it to pages you
have on Freeserve or VillageNet?
With the help
of this page and a UK internet site called http://www.easily.co.uk
it will take you 24 hours and about £10.00 to set up your own
www.<myname>.co.uk or (.com or .net a little more expensive)
This is also
a way to make your website name short enough for people
to remember as opposed to
http://www.server.com/~freeserve.spaggly.net
The following
instructions will allow you to set this up using Microsoft Internet
Explorer, it will probably work on Netscape but I havn't tried it as
yet.
It is
always best when doing this type of thing to print out these
instructions before you start.

Firstly Set up your Web Site Name
(You will need a credit card or charge card to do this)
-
Log into the Internet using your usual dial up
service.
-
Now open up a new Internet
Explorer window and type into the address bar http://www.easily.co.uk
or click the following link http://www.easily.co.uk
-
Fill in the name you want
excluding any .co.uk or .com or .net in the search box then click on
the [search] button.
-
A list of names will be
shown and their availability.
-
When you have found a name that is
available, click on the [Buy] button and follow the instructions to
buy the name. (The easily site uses Royal Bank of Scotland to
process its transactions, so it should be secure)
-
Ensure you print out the details
of the transaction, as this is your invoice.
-
You will need to wait for e-mail
confirmation and wait 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.

After 24 hours you can now change
the details
-
Log into the Internet using your usual dial up
service.
-
Open up an Internet Explorer
window and go to the web pages you wish to link to, our example
shows Yahoo. Highlight the full address and click on [Edit] the
[Copy] (This will copy the details to the clipboard)

-
Now open up a new Internet
Explorer window and type into the address bar
http://www.easily.co.uk or click the following link http://www.easily.co.uk

-
Click on [Names Admin] on the top
line, this will take you to a screen
asking for your login name and password (These were set up when you
registered your web site - see the setting up section). Fill these
in and
press [Enter] , [Return] or click on the [login] button.
-
This will now take you to a page
similar to the following picture

-
You now need to click on the web name
to be taken to the next screen
this has two fields you need to fill in
a) The Web Forwarding entry - Firstly click the button against the
input box then on the browser click [Edit] the [Paste] the details
from the other Internet Explorer page will be input into this box.
Check the two match up.

b) The Email forwarding entry - We suggest you only fill in the top
one of the fields. In the Alias box type in info then in the
Redirect To box type your current e-mail address.

-
When you have filled in the above
entries click the save button on the page and the details will be
saved.
-
Log out of the site by clicking the
[logout] button.
-
Finally log back in using steps 3,4
and 5 then click on the web site name and check the details are OK.
-
Log out of the site - wait 24 hours,
then try your http://www.<myname>.co.uk
site to see if it has worked. If not verify the details again using
step 9.
