These are stone steps used to help ladies mount their horses.

Details :-

Although those three steps beside the church wall seem to lead nowhere, they were an important feature in the days when horses were the common mode of transport. The ladies with their long skirts would have had great difficulty on mounting their horses (even side-saddle) without the aid of these steps. They are known as mounting blocks and are to be found in several places. I remember that there was one at the southern side of the Horse & Groom car-park in Rushlake Green at least until the end of 1959 when last I saw it.
