The Brede Giants are a pair of wonderful Victorian Steam Pumping Engines.

Nowadays you take it for granted that when you turn on the tap, out comes good quality, clean water, but how is it moved around? Yes, in pipes, propelled with the help of high pressure pumps. But in the 1900s, water companies relied upon steam power to pump water from deep wells into reservoirs.

In the 1960s, many of our Victorian and Edwardian engineering masterpieces were demolished, but some survived, such as the Giants of Brede steam pumping engines.
Many of us hanker after a return to the `good old days' and the chance of seeing the past in action, and maybe participating in its preservation for the future. Just six miles from Hastings stands the Brede Waterworks site, with its two triple expansion steam engines, housed in Grade II Listed buildings.

Come along and see just what Victorian Engineering at its best looks like.
