Great Dixter House and Gardens

A beautiful fifteenth century house and gardens
From the main A28 passing throught the village of Northiam , follow the signs for Great Dixter, the house lies about 1/2 mile from the centre of the village.

here for the Great Dixter Web Site.

The Great Hall Great Dixter was the home of garden writer Christopher Lloyd, who developed a most exciting garden incorporating a number of medieval buildings.

The house was built in the middle of the fifteenth century, and then restored by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1910. The restoration was carried out to recreate the medieval splendour of the property, and to build domestic quarters for the Edwardian household.

The Great Hall was constructed from oak obtained from the Wealden forest, and is one of the largest surviving timber-framed halls in the country.

The furniture and tapestries on display reflect the taste of the Lloyd family, who are the present owners.

The gardens have a large number of clipped topiary, carpets of wild meadow flowers, an ever changing tapestry of mixed borders, dreamy ponds and an Exotic garden.
