Sevensisters to the Ashdown Forest

_The Area


(Chalk Cliffs, Downs and Rural England)

The Seven Sisters to the Ashdown Forest area covers the villages between Heathfield in the north Ringmer and Seaford to the West and Polegate to the South.

The southern part of the area was heavily involved in smuggling along the coast, and sheep farming on the South Downs, the inland area has and still is mostly farming based. The South Downs have remains of bronze age encampments. The villages to the north were heavily involved in the Wealden Iron Industry . King Henry III marched through the area from Battle to Lewes to his defeat there in 1264 .

The Cuckoo Trail a footpath on the track of the old Cuckoo Line meanders down from Heathfield through Horam , Hellingly and Hailsham to Polegate , and is a very popular walk.
